Building Cultural DNA™: The Seven Dimensions
How we turned relationship science into a proprietary compatibility framework. Most dating apps start with what you look like. We started with what actually makes two people compatible for life.
Most dating apps start with a simple question: what do you look like? We started with a harder one: what actually makes two people compatible for life?
That question doesn't have a quick answer. It has decades of research behind it — research that already existed, scattered across the work of relationship scientists, cultural psychologists, and behavioral researchers, but that no dating app had ever bothered to translate into an actual matching system. So we built one. We call it Cultural DNA™.
Why We Didn't Start From Scratch
We didn't invent the idea that values, family, and communication style matter more than photos — psychologists have known that for decades. What was missing wasn't the insight. It was the translation: turning real relationship science into something a matching algorithm could actually use.
Cultural DNA™ is built on four bodies of research that, together, cover almost everything that determines whether a relationship lasts:
John Gottman's decades of research on conflict, communication, and what actually predicts relationship success or failure — arguably the most rigorously tested body of work in relationship science.
Geert Hofstede's cultural dimensions theory, which explains how deeply culture shapes values like individualism versus collectivism, power distance, and long-term orientation — the invisible operating system behind how people see family, respect, and obligation.
Esther Perel's work on desire, intimacy, and how couples navigate the tension between security and freedom, tradition and autonomy.
Brad Klontz's research on financial psychology — the study of how money beliefs, formed early and often unconsciously, drive real conflict in relationships.
No dating app had combined these into a single compatibility framework before. We did — and structured it into seven dimensions that map directly onto what actually determines whether two people are built to last.
The Seven Dimensions
Values — the foundational beliefs about what a good life looks like. Not hobbies. Not interests. The things that don't change when circumstances do.
Family Systems — how involved family is in the relationship, how decisions get made, and whether both partners share the same expectations of extended family, obligation, and involvement.
Conflict Style — how disagreement gets handled. Directly or indirectly. Loudly or with distance. Gottman's research is clear: it's not whether couples fight, it's how — and mismatched conflict styles are one of the strongest predictors of relationship breakdown.
Financial Philosophy — money beliefs formed early in life, often inherited without ever being examined. Built directly on Klontz's financial psychology research, this dimension surfaces how partners actually think about saving, spending, and shared financial responsibility, long before it becomes a source of conflict.
Cultural Identity — not a checkbox for nationality, but the deeper values, worldview, and expectations shaped by upbringing — informed by Hofstede's work on how culture shapes individual and collective identity.
Communication Patterns — direct versus indirect, high-context versus low-context. Two people can speak the same language and still misread each other constantly if their communication styles don't align.
Life Vision — where each person is headed, not just where they are now. Marriage, children, geography, ambition, timeline. Compatibility today doesn't guarantee alignment five years from now unless this dimension is addressed directly.
From Framework to Algorithm
A framework is only useful if it can actually power something. So every one of these seven dimensions is translated into structured signals inside JOZI's matching engine — not a personality quiz bolted onto a swipe interface, but the actual foundation the matching logic is built on. When JOZI surfaces a match, it's because that person aligns with you across these seven dimensions — not because an algorithm decided you'd both stop scrolling at the same photo.
Why This Matters Now
Dating apps have spent over a decade optimizing for engagement — more swipes, more matches, more time in-app — while relationship outcomes got worse, not better. Cultural DNA™ is our answer to that trade-off: proof that a dating platform can be built on real science instead of dopamine loops, without sacrificing the product experience people expect.
This is the foundation everything else at JOZI is built on. Every match, every conversation prompt, every feature roadmap decision starts with the same question: does this deepen compatibility across these seven dimensions, or does it just chase engagement? We built Cultural DNA™ so that question would always have a clear answer.
